Special Senses at Colchester Zoo
This year there were many 'firsts' at the annual 'Special Senses' event, hosted by Colchester Zoo. They were joined by;
- The ICE Resource Service from Essex Libraries
- Speech and Language Therapy Society from the University of Essex
- The Specialist Teaching team from Essex County Council
The specialist teachers created a wonderful sensory space in which they told lots of animal related stories; children were enthralled whilst "going on a bear hunt" and "taking a stroll through the deep dark wood".
Over 30 University of Essex Speech and Language Therapy students and several Occupational Therapy students provided engaging and educational animal related sensory activities that were fun and accessible to all. Not forgetting the now famous 'Who's Poo?" game!
They had 4 stands which were packed with sensory games, activities and crafts as well as accessible information relating to the animals. They used objects, photographs, symbols, GoTalks, iPads, BigMacs, alphabet boards and signing to involve everyone that came by, a truly inclusive experience.
Due to its success, the Speech and Language Therapy Society plan to take part again next year and build upon their achievement to make it even better!
The ICE Resource Service was on hand lending out equipment and offering advice, and simply being involved with the fun!!!
